Many pet owners struggle at times with chewing and destruction of shoes, or just anything they can get their teeth on. Some breeds tend to be worse at this annoying and inconvenient little habit. Labrador Retrievers are high on this list. But, there is hope! Because as with any habit, it can be broken with time, strategy, determination and consistency.
Starting structure and routine while a pup is young is the best way to prevent destructive behavior from starting. By preventing unwanted behavior in a pet, you are strengthening the likelihood of that behavior never happening.
Even if you are not starting out with a puppy, by showing care, patience and consistency, success can be obtained.
Attention, a structured schedule, and being consistent with providing chew toys , are among the keys to prevention of a dog destroying items.
Attention:
Taking time to observe your dog, and learning his personality and quirks are good steps toward preventing undesirable behavior. Make time to show affection, dogs love pets and scratches.
Structured Schedule:
Conforming your dogs meal schedule to be consistent, aids in preventing digestive issues, and lowers their stress and anxiety (and yours). Following a consistent schedule for exercise and play will aid in physical health, contentment, and prevent excessive pent up energy. Keeping to a consistent potty schedule will help your dog learn to adapt and adjust, resulting in less messes and mistakes. This will help your dog to know what to expect, and it will help their human not forget as it will become habit when done consistently at the same time.
Providing Chew Toys:
Consistently providing a variety of chew toys and rotating them out periodically is very helpful in preventing boredom that leads to destructive behavior. It is important to wash the chew toys periodically in a vinegar - water solution or if they become soiled. As well as inspecting the chew toys for rips, tears, or disintegration and replacing as needed.
I hope this was helpful to someone. Thank you for reading. Don't forget to hug your dog today.😊
